How to Review an NBME: A Method That Finds Your Real Mistakes

Taking the form is half the value. The review is the other half, and most students do it badly: they read every explanation, nod along, and forget it by the next day. A better method is to review less, but review it deliberately.

Review while it is fresh

Do the review the same day, or the next. The thinking you did on each question is still in your head, which makes it much easier to see why you went wrong.

Go through wrong answers and flagged questions first

Start with what you got wrong and what you flagged, including flagged questions you got right. A right answer you were unsure about is a weak spot too. After that, if you have energy, skim the rest.

For each one, write down three things

Keep a simple log. For every question you review, write:

  • The topic it tested (one line).
  • Why you missed it: did not know, knew but missed, or narrowed to two.
  • The one fact or clue that decides it, in your own words.

Look for the pattern, not the question

After a block, read through your log. Three renal questions in a row, or the same kind of misreading again and again, is the signal. That is what you fix, not the individual questions.

Use the explanations, then close them

Good explanations help most when you read them to answer one question: why is the right answer right, and why are the others wrong? Then close the explanation and try to say it back. If you cannot, add it to your review list.

Our free PDFs for NBME 20 to 23 explain every question this way: the clue you may have missed, why the answer is right, and why the other choices are traps.

Retest what you missed

Come back to your log in a few days and test yourself on the facts you wrote down. Mistakes you do not retest tend to come back on the next form.

Reading explanations isn't the hard part.

Knowing which mistakes are costing you points is.
That's what we do in our CrackNBME Mentorship Program™.
